(CNN) – Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro said Thursday that while his government will distribute approved coronavirus vaccines to the population for free, he personally will not be vaccinated.
Bolsonaro has repeatedly downplayed the severity of COVID-19, even after contracting the virus in July, and raised concerns about future vaccines.
During his weekly live broadcast on social media Thursday evening, Bolsonaro said the federal government would purchase the vaccines approved by Anvisa’s regulatory commission and “make them available to the population freely and voluntarily.”
Bolsonaro said: “I’ll tell you, I’m not going to wear it. It’s my right. ”He also said Congress is unlikely to make the vaccine mandatory.
Brazil has the second highest number of covid-19-related deaths in the world and the third highest number of total cases.
