Donald Trump is considering launching his 2024 election campaign on Joe Biden’s inauguration day, it was reported, considering how to keep the spotlight on him in his post-White House life.
Trump, who has yet to admit defeat, and perhaps never will, was asked on Thanksgiving if he would attend Biden’s inauguration on January 20.
“I don’t want to say it yet,” he replied. “I mean, I know the answer. I’ll be honest, I know the answer.”
On Saturday The Daily Beast cited three sources who confirmed he is considering a run for 2024, and two of them said they pitched the idea of holding an event during Biden’s grand opening, to cause maximum disruption.
According to two sources with direct knowledge of the matter, the president has privately bragged that he would still remain in the spotlight, even though Biden is in the Oval Office, because the media finds Biden “boring”.
November 9th Axios was among the first to report that Trump was considering a rush to 2024, something that, if successful, would make him only the second man in history to serve two non-consecutive terms. Grover Cleveland was the twenty-second and twenty-fourth president, elected in 1884 and 1892.
The White House did not comment.
President Trump is determined not to quit the White House, and is fighting in court to, in his words, “overturn the vote.”
His efforts received their final blow on Friday, when a Trump-appointed judge sitting in a Pennsylvania appeals court issued a harsh verdict on their case.
“The voters, not the lawyers, choose the president. The votes, not the short ones, decide the elections,” wrote Judge Stephanos Bibas, on behalf of the group of three judges of the Third Circuit Court of Appeal, composed entirely of nominated republicans.
Jenna Ellis, one of her attorneys, tweeted that they will now seek a resolution from the Supreme Court, although many legal experts thought it was unlikely that the court would take the case.
The president’s discussion of a 2024 campaign is seen by his associates as a tacit acceptance that his legal case is going nowhere.
It’s also a way to distract him from his loss, with figures like Jared Kushner, his son-in-law, and daughter Ivanka reportedly tasked with leading him to the idea that he’ll be leaving the White House.
His consideration of a race in 2024 is already sparking the struggle for power among his supporters, The Daily Beast reported.
During an Oval Office meeting earlier this month between Mr. Trump, Mike Pence, the vice president; Mike Pompeo, secretary of state, and Robert O’Brien, national security adviser, the president said he plans to run for office in 2024 if the 2020 election results aren’t reversed, Bloomberg reported Thursday.
“If you do – and I think I speak for everyone in attendance – we are with you 100%,” O’Brien said, according to the Bloomberg report.
It is unlikely that everyone who gathered was, in private, delighted.
If he ran a campaign for 2024, it would likely defeat the presidential ambitions of Mr. Pompeo and possibly Mr. Pence. His son, Donald Trump Jr, is enjoying the hashtag “Trump Jr 2024” and is considered a possible competitor.
Whether the president can remain a political force, and if he wants to, remains to be seen.
On the day it opened in 2017, Trump submitted documents to the Federal Electoral Commission to qualify as a 2020 candidate.
