The small Austrian town with the baddest name in the world has decided to rename itself. The reason is clear.
The community in the Braunau am Inn district is tired of joking with their names. And the residents no longer want to joke about their homeland.
On January 1, 2021, Fucking will now be called differently. Namely: fuging!
“Yes, I can confirm that this renaming will take place”, says Mayor Andrea Holzner (ÖVP) of the newspaper “Oberösterreichische Nachrichten”.
▶ ︎ The place Fucking has nothing to do with the English word F. The place has been occupied since 1070 and was probably named after Adalpert von Vuckingen. He lived in the region in the 11th century. But as early as the 6th century, a Bavarian nobleman named Focko is said to have founded the settlement.
In the 1825 Franziszeische cadastral map the village is still called Fuking. It is not known when the “c” was added, which makes it identical to the non-English word so often used.
And now it doesn’t matter.
