In the period from 23 December to 1 January, meetings of a family with unfamiliar family members or people outside the family unit can be made possible up to a maximum of ten people, according to one of the draft resolutions of the federal states for deliberations with the Chancellor presented on Tuesday to the German News Agency in Berlin. However, a self-quarantine is recommended for several days before the Christmas visits. “This can be supported by the Christmas school holidays which can be brought forward from 19 December 2020,” states the draft resolution.
This should keep the risk of corona infections as low as possible around the celebrations. Employers are also asked to help with vacation solutions. These should look into whether businesses could be closed for corporate holidays or a generous home office solution from December 23 to January 1.
Meetings with up to five people
The exceptions for Christmas and New Year should therefore also be supported by strict contact rules during the holidays. “Private meetings with friends, relatives and acquaintances must be limited to your family unit and to another family unit, but in any case to a maximum of five people”, reads in view of any restrictions from 1 December. Children up to the age of 14 should also be exempt.
The current partial lockdown – including the closure of restaurants, museums, cinemas and theaters – will be extended until December 20, according to the national newspaper. With an incidence “well” of less than 50 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days and if other conditions are met, countries should have the opportunity to deviate from this.
New Year’s fireworks are prohibited in crowded public places
Also, according to the will of the federal states, New Year’s Eve fireworks in Germany should be banned in public places and crowded streets to avoid larger groups. “The responsible local authorities determine the places and streets affected,” says the project. Basically, it is “recommended” to avoid the New Year’s fireworks at the turn of the year, however there is no ban on sales.
In schools in regions with more than 50 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days, according to the will of the federal states, a mask requirement should also be applied in the classroom from the seventh grade.
On Tuesday afternoon, the head of the chancellery, Helge Braun (CDU), wanted to consult the heads of the state chancellery. Much may have changed before Wednesday’s consultations with Merkel.
Current numbers
Health authorities reported slightly fewer new corona infections to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) on Tuesday morning than they did the previous week. 13,554 new cases were reported within 24 hours, as announced by RKI. On Tuesday, the number was 14,419.
A maximum of 23,648 reported cases was reached on Friday. At the start of the week, the numbers are generally relatively low because, according to the RKI, fewer samples are taken over the weekend and therefore fewer tests are done overall.
