After more than two weeks of lockdown, US President Donald Trump has agreed to hand over official duties to election winner Joe Biden. US GSA chief federal administration chief Emily Murphy should “do what needs to be done” to support Biden’s transition team, Trump wrote on Twitter. Biden reacted with relief. The move allows for a “smooth and peaceful” shift in government affairs, his team said. The 78-year-old is expected to be sworn in as the new president of the United States on January 20.

Joe Biden presented his candidates for key foreign and security policy posts. The Foreign Minister will be his longtime confidant and companion Antony Blinken. Jake Sullivan, also Biden’s longtime companion and expert on foreign policy, is slated to serve as National Security Advisor. Biden wants to appoint Linda Thomas-Greenfield as an ambassador to the United Nations. Alejandro Mayorkas, in turn, should head the Ministry for Internal Security. Former presidential candidate and secretary of state John Kerry is set to become a special envoy for climate issues. More personal details are expected tomorrow. According to media reports, the finance minister will be former central bank chief Janet Yellen. Biden is scheduled to take office on January 20. On the four-member committee, three members – two Democrats and one Republican – voted for certification. One Republican abstained. A blockage in the body could have led to political chaos. Biden has a clear lead of nearly 156,000 votes over Trump in Michigan. The outgoing president, however, tried to avoid certification by filing legal actions. He also invited the state’s best Republican politicians to the White House. This sparked fears that Trump could urge state parliaments to appoint their own constituency which ultimately elects the president of the United States.

EU Council President Charles Michel invited Joe Biden to a special meeting with the 27 European heads of state and government in Brussels next year. During a 20-minute phone call, Michel proposed to rebuild a “strong transatlantic alliance” based on common interests and values, the office of the President of the European Council said. The European Union is ready, together with the United States, to tackle the most pressing challenges: the crown pandemic, economic recovery, climate change, security and multilateralism.

Joe Biden says he has already decided who should become finance minister. According to the Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg news agency, this is Janet Yellen. She headed the US Federal Reserve from 2014 to 2018.
In addition to Yellen, Fed Director Lael Brainard, Atlanta Central Bank Chief Raphael Bostic, and former Fed Director Sarah Bloom Raskin were also considered candidates for the key position. Biden’s selection must be confirmed by the Senate.

A Pennsylvania judge had previously rejected Trump’s lawyers’ request to amend an ongoing lawsuit. The latter wanted to add the argument that the Pennsylvania vote was unconstitutional in their cause. Consequently, the election result should be discarded and the Pennsylvania state parliament – which is governed by Republicans – decide on the electorate.
District Judge Matthew Brann rejected this request. Trump’s team filed an appeal against this layoff. It should be examined whether Brann unfairly refused to change Trump’s cause.
Trump’s campaign team has filed dozens of lawsuits in six central states since the November 3 vote to overturn the election outcome. Without the Pennsylvania electorate, Trump cannot actually win. The result should be certified there today.
