European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Charles Michel held talks with US President-elect Joe Biden, who they invited to a summit in Brussels in 2021.

“I just spoke to President-elect Joe Biden and invited him to a special meeting in Brussels next year with EU leaders,” said Charles Michel on Twitter. He also called for “the reconstruction of a strong alliance between the European Union and the United States”, as relations between the two sides deteriorated significantly during Donald Trump’s tenure.

“It is time to join forces. In a changing world, our partnership will be more important than ever to our citizens, to revive our economy, to stop global warming and to create a safer world. The EU and the US will always have a greater impact when they act together, “Michel said.

For her part, Ursula von der Leyen said she congratulated Biden again on the victory: “I congratulated him on his victory. It is a new start for the global partnership between the EU and the US. A strong European Union and a strong United States working together can define a global agenda based on cooperation, multilateralism, solidarity and common values, “European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Twitter.

The two European leaders spoke separately on the phone with the future leader of the White House, each communicating separately on the subject. The conversation between Joe Biden and Charles Michel lasted about 20 minutes, Agerpres reports.

The discussion with Ursula von der Leyen referred to issues such as the competence of the European Commission, in particular in trade issues in which the United States and the EU are controversial, the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic and global warming, the two priorities of the ‘EU.
