Top Glove has seen an increase in demand since the start of the covid-19 pandemic, when countries rushed to purchase and stock protective gear, increasing their profits.
It now faces an increase in cases of the new coronavirus among employees – many of whom are underpaid migrant workers – from its factories in an industrial area near the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur.
More than 1,000 cases have been reported today, prompting the government to order the closure of factories.
“On the advice of the Ministry of Health, it was decided today in an extraordinary meeting to close 28 Top Glove factories (…), in stages, to allow workers to carry out tests and quarantine,” said Defense Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob, without specifying when the closures will begin.
The group has 47 laboratories, 41 of which are in Malaysia, and many of its employees are from Nepal and live in overcrowded dormitory complexes.
Top Glove, which can produce 70 billion gloves per year, did not respond to requests for comment.
Malaysia faces the arrival of a second wave of the new coronavirus pandemic, which has so far infected more than 56,000 people in the country, 337 of whom have died.
