The Irini operation – launched in April – aims to enforce the UN embargo on arms supplies to Libya by war supporters – torn fighters.
Turkey considers this naval mission to be partisan and accuses the Europeans of trying, through this mechanism, to prevent the deliveries of weapons by sea to the government of Tripoli and to silence those supplied to the most powerful man in the East. According to the European Union (EU), Irini has allowed documentation of the violation of the embargo by Turkey and Russia, two countries involved in the Libyan civil war.

Libya, shrouded in chaos following the ouster and assassination of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, is currently torn between two rival camps, the GNA based in the United Nations in Tripoli and a power in the east of the country, embodied by Marshal Haftar. .
The GNA is supported by Turkey, while the Haftar camp is supported by the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Russia and Egypt.
