The two bodies, surprised by the eruption of Vesuvius in the year 79, were found in a lateral space of the cryptoporticus, in the noble part of the suburb of Civita Giuliana, a majestic estate from the time of Emperor Augustus, which boasted they have and balconies overlooking the sea.
The land is located outside the Pompeian walls, about seven hundred meters to the northwest, and in this area in 2017, archaeologists found the remains of three horses in the stables, with their saddles and harnesses.
The cryptoporticus, for its part, allowed access to the upper floor and was a space of about 2.20 meters per year but whose length is unknown at the moment, and had a wooden floor as indicated by the presence in the walls of six holes to house the beams that supported a gallery, indicates the official statement.
To reconstruct the bodies of the victims, the experts used the ancient technique of making plaster casts, conceived in the nineteenth century by Giuseppe Fiorelli, which consists in introducing a liquid plaster into the cavities of the skeletal remains of the inhabitants of the city. ancient Roman city.
In this way they managed to restore the shape of the bodies and to observe that the first victim was a “young man, between 18 and 23/25 years old, about 156 cm tall”, who wore a short tunic, and with visible signs showing who had done “heavy work”, of which scientists and experts from Pompeii hypothesize that he was a slave.
The second man was between “30 and 40 years old and about 162 cm tall”, and wore a long tunic or wool cloak, the note reads.
The two were in a supine position, with their hands on their breasts, and with clothes that stand out down to the folds, something “amazing” as described by the Minister of Culture, Dario Franceschini.
The first excavations in the area date back to the early 20th century by order of the Marquis Giovanni Imperiali, then owner of the estate.
The works in progress have been financed entirely by the Pompeii Park with one million euros and are intended to prevent possible looting of the tombs.
