The US Food and Drug Agency’s FDA will meet on December 10 to approve Pfizer’s vaccine. If the vaccine is approved for emergency use, it will begin distribution in the United States immediately. The first US citizen should be vaccinated on 11 or 12 December.
The statement came from Moncef Slaoui, head of the COVID-19 vaccination program. Speaking on CNN television, the official said, “Our plan is to deliver the vaccine to immune centers within 24 hours of approval.”
On Friday, the vaccine from American pharmaceutical giant Pfizer and its German partner Biontech filed with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s FDA for emergency use approval.
Independent FDA consultants will meet on December 10 to discuss whether to approve the vaccine. If the vaccine is approved, distribution in the United States will begin immediately.
Slaoui said the vaccine will be distributed in states in proportion to their population, and states will decide who will be vaccinated first.
The federal administration recommends prioritizing health care workers, frontline workers, and elderly at risk.
70 percent of the population must be vaccinated to ensure community immunity. The US official said they aim to hit this rate in May.
The United States has a population of 330 million. The number of coronavirus cases in the country has exceeded 12 million. The number of cases has increased by over a million in less than a week.
Pfizer and BioNTech announced that the vaccine was 95% effective. The vaccine should be given in two doses, three weeks apart.
About 25 million vaccines are expected to be available in December in the United States.
