22/11/2020 Ethiopia (International Christian Concern) – The fighting between the Ethiopian government and the leadership of the people of Tigray has led to full civil war in the East African country. Tigray leaders started the war earlier this month after attacking and seizing a government military base. Since then, the Ethiopian government has attacked the region, capturing cities and trying to regain control of them.
Just yesterday, the Ethiopian government recaptured the city of Adigrat. This city is the second largest in the Tigray region and is the most important city recaptured since the fighting began. The government continues to push towards the capital Mekele.
The Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), the ruling party in the region, said the government spearheaded the aggression and killed many Tigray civilians. Because of this they fought for freedom. They also fired missiles at the capital of Eritrea, Asmara. These missiles were due to the fact that Eritrea wanted to help the Ethiopian government in an attempt to retake Tigray. This fighting is taking place between the people of Tigray, the third largest ethnic group in Ethiopia, and the Amhara-led government, the second largest ethnic group. Both of these groups are majority Orthodox Christians.
