Romanians are the most optimistic Europeans, according to a poll conducted by the European Parliament. The third Eurobarometer conducted in the last year since the pandemic broke out also shows that European citizens believe that the EU needs more powers to resolve the coronavirus crisis.
When asked what sentiment describes them most during this period, 56% of Romanians responded to this hope. The French, on the other hand, with thousands of deaths and tens of thousands of cases a day, have chosen above all “fear”. The Spaniards – the feeling of helplessness, over 70% of Cypriots – insecurity and the Greeks oscillate between frustration and anger. On the other hand, the Dutch and Finns feel confident, even though they are having a hard time.
Europeans were also asked how economically affected they were during this period. Most Cypriots say they have also felt the epidemiological crisis in their pockets. In second place in this peak are Greeks, Spaniards and Romanians. 55% of them believe personal vanities have already been hit. At the opposite pole are the Danes and Luxembourgers.
As for the decisions taken by the European Union against Covid-19, the most satisfied are Irish citizens, followed by Maltese ones. And half of Romanians agree with the EU reaction.
Europeans were also asked if they would like more powers for the European Union. Over 80% of those in Malta and Portugal believe this would be necessary in the context of the pandemic. At the opposite pole are Czechs and Swedes.
The survey was conducted online and by telephone by Kantar for the European Parliament from 25 September to 7 October 2020. 24,812 citizens from all 27 EU Member States participated.
