Jonathan Pollard, a spy who has been detained in the United States for decades for spying on behalf of Israel, is allowed to leave the United States. A five-year ban on leaving the country after Pollard’s release from prison in 2015 expired on Friday, the United States Department of Justice said. A commission responsible for probation conditions concluded that the 66-year-old was not in great danger of future violations of the law. For this reason, the trial period has not been extended.

The former US Navy intelligence analyst was arrested in 1985 for leaking thousands of US secret documents to Israeli intelligence. The case caused considerable resentment among the allied states and embarrassed the Israeli government.

Born into a Jewish family in Texas, Pollard was sentenced to life in prison. In 2015 he was released from prison under strict conditions after 30 years in prison. Pollard, who has also been an Israeli citizen since 1995, was banned from, among other things, leaving the country for five years.

According to previous statements from his family, he would like to emigrate to Israel, where he is celebrated by many as a hero. The Israeli government had campaigned for Pollard to leave the country.
