Sweden: the failed crown strategy – DER SPIEGEL

Things looked good for Sweden last month. “Sweden was right,” tweeted high-tech billionaire Elon Musk, the founder of Tesla and SpaceX. In his short message, Musk hung up a chart with the Swedish krona death numbers: After extreme swings in the spring, the curve was now just above the zero line.

Like Musk, many thought that the Scandinavian country’s special path should pay off this fall. Led by their state epidemiologist Anders Tegnell, the Swedes had largely trusted that they could handle the pandemic with few restrictions: common sense instead of coercion and blockade.

The liberal strategy has been observed with astonishment and celebrated by some around the world. The blue and yellow flag of Sweden is a popular accessory in demonstrations against the German crown policy. The fact that the death rate from Covid-19 had increased many times in the spring compared to neighboring Nordic countries and Germany did not change the expectations that the Swedish model had raised.
