Finally, traveling is easier again. Only four countries are on the quarantine list of the Federal Office of Public Health (BAG). What goes down, however: not all people can enter Switzerland. For example, although the US is no longer on the quarantine list, US tourists cannot come to Switzerland yet. You will not get a visa.
The State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) has had its own risk list since March. Indicates the countries from which foreigners can enter Switzerland and which are subject to an entry ban. At the start of the pandemic, the Federal Council decided to stop all unnecessary travel. The visa retainer should support this. In March this first applied to all countries. Since June, the Schengen countries have been removed from the list and in July the authorities resumed issuing visas.
European countries excluded
Currently, all countries outside the Schengen area – with a few exceptions – are on the risk list. This includes countries in Europe that have not signed the Schengen Agreement, such as Ireland, Croatia or Romania. Outside of Europe, individual countries such as Japan, Australia, Singapore or Thailand are listed as exceptions. “Our experts determine the exceptions,” says Lukas Rieder of SEM. The borders with Switzerland are closed to citizens of all other countries. With this, the SEM wants to slow the spread of the corona pandemic.
Stays of less than three months without gainful employment are prohibited for foreigners on the risk list. Visas for longer stays are also not currently issued. The SEM lists several exceptions to this rule. For example, employee visas will continue to be issued. Shorter stays are possible, for example, in the event of death, visits to children or a partner.
The difficulties must be demonstrated
Anyone who wants to use this exception rule must be able to explain it. “Regardless of whether it is a visa or a short stay, the respective Swiss consulate must issue an entry certificate,” says Rieder. This also increases the security of being caught by the airline. The SEM writes that the airlines themselves decide if and under what conditions they want to take people with them.
The BAG quarantine list becomes effective only after entering Switzerland. It applies to both Swiss and foreigners. The quarantine list is added to the SEM entry restriction for foreigners.
