Several pertinent topics regarding the Rwandan mining industry were highlighted during the Africa Mining Forum media briefing on November 10, 2020.

How do mining companies operate in the mineral-rich regions of East Africa and how can investments be channeled accordingly?

Results of an audience survey held during Africa mining review and Africa Mining forumLive roundtable on the hottest mining investment destinations in East Africa (listen to the webinar here) indicated that the region has a lot of mining promise. Rwanda (37%), Tanzania (27%) and Ethiopia (24%) were voted the most attractive countries to offer the greatest return on investment.

East Africa encompasses Tanzania, Rwanda, and Ethiopia and is home to some of the most sought-after metals and minerals, but despite that, it remains largely unexplored.

Hon. Francis Gatare, CEO of Rwanda Mines, Petroleum and Gas Board, stressed that the mining sector quickly resumed activity, albeit at lower volumes from the easing of lockdown protocols.

“The board’s vision remains intact and the country is determined to build a strong and profitable mining industry that contributes on a larger scale to Rwanda’s GDP, aligning with the Africa Mining Vision,” he explained.

The Africa Mining Vision enables African nations to negotiate contracts with mining multinationals that generate fair rents of resources and enter into local inputs for operations.

At the regional level, this means integrating mining into industrial and trade policy.

As for investments in the mining sector, Gatare believes that Rwanda has the perfect recipe for attracting investment for junior miners, due to the fact that its mining code has recently seen revisions that specifically target the sector.

The panel of mining representatives on the media briefing included:

  • Brian Menell, president and CEO of TechMet
  • Duncan Harris, president of the Australia Africa Chamber of Commerce, and;
  • Prof. Dr. Radoslaw Miskiewicz, CEO of Luma Holding Ltd. and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of LuNa Smelter

These esteemed speakers will share further insights into the African mining investment landscape during the 2020 Africa Mining Forum digital event, taking place November 16-20.

The event is co-hosted and sponsored by the Rwanda Mines, Petroleum and Gas Board. Register for your virtual seat at the 2020 Africa Mining Forum digital event Here.
