Bill Barr, one of the ministers most loyal to the incumbent president, pointed out that this authorization, sent to federal prosecutors across the country, does not indicate that the Justice Department has evidence of genuine fraud, Agerpres informs.
“I authorize you to investigate substantive allegations of irregularity in voting or counting of ballots prior to the certification of elections in your jurisdictions, in some cases,” he wrote in the document.
“Such investigations can be conducted if there are clear and potentially credible allegations of irregularities that, if proven, could have an impact on the outcome of a federal election in a state,” he added.
Investigations into electoral fraud are normally the responsibility of each state, which establishes and controls its own electoral rules.
The US Department of Justice does not usually intervene in such a situation until the number of votes is certified and the count is incomplete.
Donald Trump’s campaign team is challenging Joe Biden’s achievements in several states, primarily Pennsylvania and Nevada.
