Joe Biden’s victory in the US presidential election means the White House will once again host a pet, or, in this case, two dogs. One, called Major, makes history as the first dog in an animal shelter to live in the residence of the American president.
The Biden family includes two German Shepherds: Major, a young rescue dog, and Champ, who lived at Number One Observatory Circle (official residence of the United States Vice President) in Washington during the Barack Obama administration, when Joe Biden served as deputy president.
“Of all of us, Champ will have a hard time leaving this place,” Jill Biden told The Washington Post as she prepared to leave the vice president’s residence in 2017. “Champ has a family here 24 hours a day, with the whole team. and the security guards who always give him cookies, ”he said at the time.
Champ has been in the Biden family since late 2008 when Joe bought him from a breeder in Pennsylvania, then a three-month-old puppy. Biden promised granddaughters that they could choose the name of the new family pet.
Jill Biden had promised Joe that they would have a dog after the 2008 election and, according to Politico, “would have recorded photos of different dogs on the back of the seat facing Biden on his field plane.”
In November 2018, the Bidens adopted Major, a German shepherd, into the Delaware Humane association after being their host family for about eight months.
In February, the New Hampshire Union Leader newspaper asked Democratic candidates why their pets were so important to them.
