The Covid-19 vaccine developed by pharmaceutical company Pfizer is more effective than expected, according to first studies published this Monday.
The company revealed that the vaccine was effective in 90% of the cases in which it worked in preventing the disease.
“Today is a great day for science and humanity. The first batch of results from the phase 3 trial of the Covid-19 vaccine provides initial evidence of our vaccine’s ability to prevent Covid-19,” said Dr. Albert Bourla, Pfizer president and CEO.
The Pfizer vaccine was developed in collaboration with the German BioNTech. The company is now considering applying for an emergency authorization to obtain the vaccine in late November, after all safety tests have been completed.
By the end of the year, enough doses are expected to immunize 15 to 20 million people, company executives said.
Eleven vaccines are in final testing in the United States. The advancement of the Pfizer vaccine could mean that the Moderna vaccine could also be a success in the fight against the novel coronavirus, as both use similar “technologies”.
