The representatives of the native peoples of Chile have asked for greater agility in approving the seats that will guarantee their participation in the Constituent Convention that will draft the new Magna Carta, as well as participating politically in the instances in which decisions will be taken.

Speaking to local media, the director of the Leftraru Indigenous Entrepreneurs and Professionals Association, from the Coquimbo region (north), Sonia Neyra Rojas, stressed that political participation is important for those communities that have traditionally been excluded from this exercise, and more than a need is a requirement.
He recalled that the right and center parties signed the document known as the Social Peace Agreement and the new Constitution on November 15, 2019, but this did not take into account women, indigenous peoples and the independents.
Referring to political participation, the councilor of the Colla Community, of the Atacama region (also in the north), Flora Normilla, stressed that it is one of the great requests of the native peoples but must be considered beyond the constituent body.
He said that indigenous peoples should also have protected quotas in parliament, regional governments, municipalities and all those institutions where there is decision-making.
Last Thursday the Senate Constitution Commission approved 24 seats reserved for indigenous peoples in that body, a reform that will be examined next week by the plenary session of the upper house.
The proposal must be approved by three-fifths of the senators in office, a requirement that represents an obstacle in its path given the interest the ruling party has in this project failing, as opposition lawmakers warned last week.
