The Iranian regime asks Joe Biden to return to the nuclear deal

The president of Iran asked the president-elect of the United States, Joe Biden, to “undo past mistakes” and bring the United States back to the 2015 nuclear deal signed by the Tehran regime with various international powers, according to a Persian state news agency on Sunday.

Hassan Rohani’s remarks were the highest-level commentary in Iran on the election result after it was given to Biden and the elected vice president, Kamala Harris, as winners in the November 3 elections.

“Now an opportunity has arisen for the next US government to rectify the mistakes of the past and get back on the path of complying with international agreements by complying with international standards.The Persian president said so, according to the state agency IRNA.

Tensions between the Iranian regime and the United States escalated during the outgoing president’s tenure, Donald Trumpand peaked this year. One of Trump’s most important foreign policy decisions was to unilaterally withdraw the US from the nuclear deal in 2018. The deal limited Iran’s enrichment of uranium in exchange for lifting economic sanctions.

After leaving the pact, The United States reintroduced tough sanctions against Iran that weighed down its economy, which later suffered another major setback from the coronavirus pandemic. In an attempt to persuade Europe to find a way around the sanctions, Iran has abandoned the limits set by the agreement.

“The Iranian people, through their heroic resistance against the imposed economic war, proved that the US policy of maximum pressure was doomed to fail,” Rohani said.

Iran “views constructive dialogue with the world as a strategy,” he added.

For their part, the Taliban said on Sunday to expect Biden respects the agreement on the withdrawal of Afghan troops reached in early 2020 between Washington and the Afghan insurgents.

The administration of Donald Trump and the Taliban signed an agreement on total withdrawal of US troops before May 2021 in Doha in February in exchange for a series of security guarantees.

“We signed an agreement with the US government, not just one person,” he told the agency. AFP Mohamad Naeem, one of the spokesmen of the Taliban.

“We hope that the ongoing process will not be weakened, but strengthened,” he added of an agreement that implies that the insurgents collaborate in preventing attacks in Afghanistan by jihadist groups such as the Islamic State (IS) and Al Qaeda .

Biden’s victory, however, has raised some hope among some Afghans who consider the withdrawal of US troops too premature.

The withdrawal of troops present abroad was one of the guidelines of Trump’s military and international policy, who tried to fulfill his promise to turn the page on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
