If Donald Trump has taken Twitter by storm, now it’s Kamala Harris heralding a new era for the Insta generation. In the shadow of the older, male candidates, the vice president-elect has achieved cult status in left-wing liberal circles in recent months, just like the Obamas more recently. On election night alone, Harris’ number of Instagram followers increased a good quarter to 10.4 million. The short winning post – Harris in racing clothes on the phone with Joe Biden, says “We did it, Joe” and bursts into liberating laughter – was seen by nearly 20 million people in no time.
Kamala Harris has become an icon of change and thus fulfilled the expectations of electoral strategists, at least in view of the liberal-progressive clientele of the coastal regions. While the stern prosecutor didn’t impress conservative circles and didn’t make a strong campaign appearance for the general public: at 56, significantly younger than the president-elect, Harris becomes the hope of a politicized young generation under Trump, the blacks – and especially women.
Appearance in suffragette color
For the first time in the history of the United States, a woman has won the title of president, even if it is preceded by a “vice”. The symbolic power of this choice is enormous. Hillary Clinton, who failed four years ago because of the electoral system and because of Trump, who despises women, was one of the first to congratulate. It’s been 36 years since Geraldine Ferraro became the first woman to run for vice president. Until now, all the candidates had failed.
In Victory Night Harris appeared all white, the color of the suffragettes who began the long road to equality in Britain and the United States one hundred years ago. “Even if I could be the first woman in this position, I won’t be the last because tonight every little girl will see that this is a land of opportunity,” Harris said amid applause.
Celebrated by the boys
Your options are clearly defined: Harris is now the most promising Democratic candidate for the next presidential nomination – or why Biden, given his age, must or wants to leave office. From the first minute in the deputy office, Harris will also act as a candidate and Biden will perhaps give her a big stage.
How skillfully Harris looks after his clientele, he demonstrated in the election campaign. Whether with the activists of “Black Lives Matter” or in the rhythm and blues community: Harris was present and celebrated as the star of a new era. The network exploded after an appearance in the “Battle of Verzuz” by R&B stars Brandy and Monica, a DJ show watched by more than a million people. Today Harris is tied to the hope of a pacification of ethnic tensions. In multicultural centers on the coasts of the United States, people wear T-shirts with their likeness. I’m pretty sure “We did it, Joe” will be there soon too.
