For days, Donald Trump has been calling for the vote to be halted in the face of his impending electoral defeat. Now the US Supreme Court should help him: Republicans are asking for an urgent order. The court has already decided exactly this, but the situation has changed since then.
In the dispute over mail order votes in the US state of Pennsylvania, Republicans under President Donald Trump have again turned to the US Supreme Court. Pennsylvania Republicans urged the Washington Supreme Court to urgently ban the counting of post office ballots received after election day. These ballots should be separate from the others and should not be counted.
Pennsylvania had decided to expand postal votes due to the crown pandemic. Under this, all ballots received by the electoral officer up to three days after election day will be accepted, provided they are stamped on November 3. The deadline expired on Friday at 11pm German time.
Even before the election, Republicans had tried to get the Supreme Court to pick up this extension. The constitutional judges refused to deal with the case in mid-October and then again just before the election. At the same time, they left open the possibility of a legal examination after the elections. In the Supreme Court, after Trump-appointed lawyer Amy Coney Barrett, conservative judges have a large six-out-of-three majority.
Trend: Votes do not affect the election result
Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden last passed Trump in the Pennsylvania vote count. This is because postal votes are counted last and a particularly large number of Democratic supporters voted by mail. Meanwhile, Biden is nearly 15,000 votes ahead of Trump in Pennsylvania, which could be an election. If the former vice president wins the state’s 20 voters, he will get the 270 electoral votes required for the presidency.
Pennsylvania electoral authorities have already issued a precautionary measure to separate mail-order votes received after voting day from others. At the moment, their numbers appear to be too small to influence the election result in the state.
Trump claimed victory on election night and demanded that the vote count be stopped. He announced he was going to the Supreme Court. The president has repeatedly denounced alleged electoral fraud without any evidence and accuses the Democrats of trying to “steal” his election. These claims are also met with criticism within their own ranks.
