The real winner of the presidential election has been clear for some time: the turnout. Over 66% of Americans eligible to vote are expected to have voted – that would be the highest turnout in more than a century! In 1900, 73.7 percent cast their vote, however, the number of those eligible to vote was also much lower because women were not allowed to vote at that time.
The two candidates could rely in particular on these voters and states (in brackets the advantage over the respective challenger in percentage of votes):
Joe Biden
1. Political Friends in Washington DC (+87)
In the capital, Biden liquidated a lot. The explanation should be simple: a large number of academics and politicians who have known Joe Biden for decades. At the age of 29, the current 77-year-old became a senator here.
2. Uni-Elite in Massachusetts (+35)
The east coast state is firmly in democratic hands. The university environment is likely to have a particular impact on policy outcomes – the famous Harvard universities and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) are located here.
3. California’s technological and film scene (+32)
The most important state for Democrats since Bill Clinton’s first election in 1992 – after all, California has 55 voters at a time. California was still a fluctuating state in the late 1980s. Today, the liberal state of the west coast is socially diverse and is home to the film industry and large tech companies.
Donald Trump
1. Trump-Fans in Wyoming (+43)
One poll showed that three-quarters of Trump voters in the Great Plains to the east and the Rockies to the west are true fans. For comparison: 60% of Biden’s voters only vote for him to vote for Trump. The most populous US state has been in the hands of the Republicans for 60 years. However, the governorship is mostly democratic.
2. Industriearbeiter in West Virginia (+39)
As a former coal mining center, part of the “Rust Belt”, the oldest and largest industrial region in the United States. Here Donald Trump scored particularly well four years ago, after all, he promised to bring jobs back. He has only been able to deliver on his promise to a limited extent, but the region is on his side.
3. Conservative in Oklahoma (+33)
Red, more red, Oklahoma: the name means something like “The land of the red man”. This is also the political agenda. In only three of the total of 77 counties Joe Biden was above 40%. At the latest by the Civil Rights Act, the state voted reliably and prudently. In Tulsa’s second largest city, Trump also held his first rally since the blockade.
