During construction work in a residential area of the city of Chemnitz, the explosive device was located.
The deactivation of a WWII bomb found during construction in a residential area in the eastern German city of Chemnitz will force about 15,000 people to be evacuated within a 1,000-meter radius this Friday, November 6.
Local authorities said today in a statement that after consulting all those involved and after “careful consideration of limited options” following the coronavirus pandemic, the evacuation will begin at 6am on Friday morning.
The city asked all residents and other affected people to personally take care of the organization of temporary accommodation and added that in the case of those who cannot find alternative accommodation, the authorities will take care throughout the day to communicate the possible options.
The report asks the interested parties to leave the perimeter area as soon as possible, since the deactivation of the air bomb, 250 kilograms and American-made, can only begin once the corresponding area has been evacuated.
“Therefore, the agility of the operation largely depends on the participation of those affected by the evacuation,” the city recalls, adding that at the moment it is not possible to determine when residents will be able to return to their homes.
Even schools, nurseries, medical consultations, companies, businesses and service providers must stop their activities for the entire duration of the intervention.
