US Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden on Wednesday expressed unwavering confidence that he will come out victorious against President Donald Trump, but paused before declaring victory prematurely.
“After a long night of counting, it is clear that we are winning enough states to reach the 270 Electoral College votes needed to win the presidency,” Biden said, speaking in his home state of Delaware with his running mate, Kamala Harris. . “I am not here to declare that we have won, but I am here to report when the count is over, we believe we are the winner.”
Biden maintains his leadership in key state Michigan and is reducing the president’s lead in the states of Pennsylvania, Georgia and North Carolina as early ballots continue to be counted.
States are in the midst of counting ballot papers following an unprecedented volume of absentee ballots.
Trump has long accused mail-order voting of being subject to fraud, warning people to vote instead in person.
While his claims would have been completely ignored by the Democrats, they were likely heeded by his political supporters. Of the more than 37.5 million people who voted early by mail, just over a quarter of the ballots were submitted by Republicans, according to the US Elections Project.
Noting the advantage he has in ballots by mail, Biden expressed strong optimism in Pennsylvania, where he said that “virtually all of the remaining votes to count were cast by mail, and we won 78% of the votes by mail in Pennsylvania. “
According to the ongoing tally, Trump’s lead is shrinking in the state, down to under 320,000 votes with 16% of the expected results pending.
The disproportionate composition of mail order votes that several key states are now tabulating has led Biden to narrow Trump’s lead in several states.
After prematurely declaring victory early Wednesday morning, Trump denounced the progress of the work, infuriated that a vague “they” are “finding Biden votes everywhere – in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Michigan.”
“They are working hard to make 500,000 votes disappear in Pennsylvania – as soon as possible. Likewise, Michigan and others!” he said on Twitter.
Trump remains behind Biden in the race to secure at least 270 constituency votes. The race remains competitive, however, with Biden leading 248-214, according to The Associated Press.
