The death of young African American Walter Wallace Jr. in Philadelphia, United States, at the hands of police officers, has sparked new protests against abuse of authority. The tragic event took place last Monday and there were two nights of violent demonstrations.

What happened to Wallace Jr., 27, was recorded in the videos of witnesses who recorded the intervention of two agents who arrived in the Cobbs Creek neighborhood, after being warned of the presence on the street of a man with a knife.

The victim’s mother tried to contain her son’s advance towards the agents, who shot her several times. According to his wife, he was bipolar.

“My client was a mental health patient,” said Shaka Johnson, the family’s attorney.

For Philadelphia district attorney Larry Krasner, what happened is a fact that raises more doubts about the police procedure.

“This is an issue that I am analyzing personally, I must say that I agree with both the police commissioner and the mayor that this raises some very serious questions that need to be answered,” he said.

Responses requested by protesters on Tuesday 27 October 2020 in the protests that ended with the looting.

“What happened was a question of color. But, as you can see, it’s not that anymore. Everyone is shocked because he could have been anyone’s son, “said Ameer Barber, one of the protesters.

This new episode of racial tension occurs less than a week later presidential election in the United States
