The incident occurred on Sunday. Authorities announced Tuesday that a 12-year-old boy and his guide fell victim to a shark near Sharm el-Sheikh on a coral reef. The boy and his mother, Ukrainian tourists, went snorkeling with their guide.
The crash site in Ras Mohammed National Park is popular with snorkelers with its dive sites. There the ocean shark attacked the group. The severely bleeding wounds were taken to the hospital. As announced by the Ukrainian tourism authority, the 12-year-old is in intensive care.
Despite the emergency operation, the boy’s torn hand could not save. His forearm had to be amputated. The boy suffered deep bite wounds on his back. The guide lost a leg, the mother ran away with “deep wounds”. Two other people in the group sustained minor injuries.
The authorities are closing the dive sites
Egyptian authorities said underwater video footage showed the shark behaved abnormally and hostile to humans. The diving spots in the area have been temporarily closed. The predator is said to be a white tip shark.
Shark attacks in the Red Sea off the Egyptian coast are extremely rare. The last fatal attack occurred ten years ago. The national park at the southern end of the Sinai Peninsula is a popular destination near Sharm el-Sheikh, one of the largest tourist destinations in Egypt and an important source of foreign currency in the country.
