Almost 4,000 new infections in Portugal
Portugal reported a record of new coronavirus infections. Health authorities announced Wednesday in Lisbon that 3,960 infections have been registered in the country with 10.3 million inhabitants.
Due to the rapidly increasing number, Prime Minister António Costa has called a special meeting of his cabinet for Saturday. The socialist government has announced that new measures will be discussed to contain the pandemic. The state secretary in charge of health, António Lacerda Sales, said the situation was “critical”.
In the country, which has been through the Corona crisis relatively well for a long time, almost 130,000 infections have already been recorded. The number of people who died from Covid-19 increased from 24 to 2,395 on Wednesday. According to the latest data from the European agency ECDC, 343.6 per 100,000 inhabitants in Portugal were infected with the virus within 14 days. In Germany, the so-called 14-day incidence on Thursday was 156.2.
