Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta has called a stakeholder meeting next week following a recent resurgence of COVID-19 cases.

On Wednesday, Kenya reported its highest case burden, with 1,018 confirmed cases, bringing the country’s total to 51,851.

The East African nation is one of only nine countries in Africa that have reported more than 50,000 COVID-19 infections.

“The session will consider the evolution of the disease, as well as epidemiological models on how COVID-19 can spread in our country in the months of November and December 2020,” reads a statement from President Kenyatta’s spokesman.

Kenya eased coronavirus restrictions in September and has seen a steady rise in the number of cases since.

According to the latest figures from the World Health Organization, Kenya reported the second highest number of new COVID-19 infections in Africa in the past week.

Over the same period, Kenya also recorded the third highest virus mortality in Africa, with the total death toll now at 950.
