Kenya reported the second highest number of new COVID-19 infections in Africa in the past week, the World Health Organization revealed.

The East African country has seen a recent resurgence of new cases of the virus following a month-long easing of restrictions.

According to data published by the WHO, Kenya has registered 4,594 new cases of COVID-19 in the last week, a figure obscured only by South Africa, the country most affected by the continents.

Over the same period, Kenya recorded the third highest virus mortality in Africa. Its 71 deaths are eclipsed only by Ethiopia (73) and South Africa (536).

The East African country is one of only nine African states that have reported COVID-19 cases exceeding 50,000.

The Kenyan government allowed schools to partially reopen, eased the night curfew and also lifted lockdowns that had been imposed on high-risk regions including the capital, Nairobi.

In addition to Kenya, neighboring Ethiopia also continued to report a high number of new COVID-19 infections.

The country has reported 4,424 news cases in the past seven days, the third highest figure reported in Africa. His total number of infections was 94,218 by Wednesday afternoon.
