The United States warned on Monday, October 26, that it will destroy possible shipments of Iranian long-range missiles delivered to the government of Nicolás Maduro. This was stated by Elliott Abrams, special representative of the State Department for Iran and Venezuela to the Fox News network.

“The transfer of long-range missiles from Iran to Venezuela is not acceptable to the United States and will not be tolerated or permitted,” Abrams said.

“We will do everything possible to stop long-range missile shipments, and if they somehow reach Venezuela they will be eliminated there,” added the senior US official.

“Iran has announced its intention to participate in the arms sale, and Venezuela is an obvious target because those two rogue regimes already have a relationship,” Abrams said.

“Venezuela is paying in gold to buy gasoline from Iran and there is an Iranian presence in the country. The Venezuelan economy has collapsed, so each gold bar for Iran is tens of thousands of dollars that the Venezuelan people need for food and medicine, “he said.

A United Nations embargo on Iran’s buying and selling of conventional weapons expired last week. The Trump administration has tried unsuccessfully to persuade the United Nations Security Council to extend the embargo.

“Iran has sent missiles to the Houthis, so we know they are ready, willing and able to send them to Venezuela and other potential buyers,” Abrams pointed out.

Then he added: “Each Iranian arms delivery destabilizes South America and the Caribbean, and is particularly dangerous for Venezuela’s neighbors in Brazil, Colombia and Guyana.”
