The intergovernmental development authority (IGAD) of the regional bloc has asked the president of South Sudan Salva Kiir to pay the balance of the 100 million dollars promised to accelerate the implementation of the peace agreement.
Igad, who brokered the peace agreement, urged Juba "be transparent and implement accountability mechanisms in the use of funds for the implementation of the peace agreement ".
The blockade also invited rival leaders – President Kiir and Riek Machar – to organize a face-to-face meeting to resolve outstanding issues.
The government had previously committed to release the funds for the implementation of the agreement, but the cash has not yet been paid.
The Reconstituted Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (RJMEC) reported that between April and July, only $ 6.5 million was paid out for security agreements.
South Sudan has been put under pressure by the international community to use oil revenues to finance the peace process.
