Mike Pompeo, Secretary of State of the United States, spoke on the phone with Chrystia Freeland, his counterpart in Canada, on the arrest of two Canadians in China and on issues such as Russia and Venezuela.

Robert Palladino, one of the spokesmen for American diplomacy, confirmed the information on Wednesday in a statement.

The Secretary of State and the Canadian Foreign Minister "discussed a series of global and bilateral issues, including Russia and Venezuela," the statement reads.

Regarding Venezuela, the United States and Canada have expressed their refusal to Nicolás Maduro and have supported the work of the National Assembly (AN) as "the only legitimate democratic entity" in that country.

Likewise, Palladino said both officials stressed Canada's commitment to a "fair, impartial and transparent" legal process before the extradition request from Meng Wanzhou, Huawei's chief financial officer.

Wanzhou was arrested on 1 December 2018 by the Canadian judicial authorities at the request of the United States, requesting his extradition for alleged fraud allegedly infringing the trade sanctions imposed by the United States on Iran.

After Meng's arrest, China arrested two Canadians, Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor, presumably for endangering the country's national security, which was interpreted by various experts as a retaliation from Beijing.

In this context, officials expressed concern over "arbitrary arrests and convictions for political reasons of Canadian citizens".
