Seoul recorded a record level of air pollution on Monday after the PM 2.5 index reached 188 micrograms per cubic meter.

This volume is the highest registered in the South Korea since they started making measurements in 2015.

The index far exceeds the previous record high of 99 micrograms on March 25 last year and represents more than seven times the 25 micrograms recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Pollution has forced the metropolitan government to activate the protocol with harmful levels, which force half of the cars registered in Seoul to not circulate.

In addition, the Ministry of the Environment has commissioned the thermoelectric plants located nearby Seoul that reduce production to 80%, the agency said "Yonhap".

About 20 million people, almost half the population of South Korea, live in Seoul and its border region.
