Renate Wedel lived in the Waldsolms six-village municipality of Hesse with her husband, Alfred Wedel, in 1975.
Alfred was a successful stock market investor and died in 2014, and Renate, who had been cared for in a nursing home in Frankfurt since 2016, died in December 2019 at the age of 81.
In April of this year, the municipality announced that Renate had left them a bank account, shares and valuables.
Renate’s sister, who was the original heir, was already dead, local media reported.
The news came as a shock to the authorities. “At first I thought it just wasn’t possible, I thought it was a wrong comma, something was wrong,” said local mayor Bernd Heine.
The community is obliged to use the assets, valued at € 6.2 million, for “community structures and infrastructures”.
