The European Union has agreed to purchase up to 300 million doses of the vaccine developed by Pfizer in collaboration with BioNTech. The first deliveries are expected to take place next month, the Financial Times said. Delivery, however, depends on the approval of the regulatory authorities, i.e. the European Medicines Agency.
“The supply agreement finalized today with the European Commission represents the largest initial vaccine dose order to date and an important step towards our shared goal of making the COVID-19 vaccine available to vulnerable populations,” says Albert. Bourla, Pfizer CEO.
The vaccine, which will be produced in Germany and Belgium, will be distributed to Member States on the basis of orders placed separately. According to the same publication, each country interested in having access to the vaccine will make its individual request. German Health Minister Jens Spahn has already anticipated that he will try to guarantee 100 million doses to German citizens.
It is recalled that the agreement between the EU and Pfizer and BioNTech was announced in September, but the negotiations have just concluded. The most recent results of the tests carried out by the two companies, released last Monday, indicate an efficiency of over 90%.
