On the roof of the University of Lyon, three gas bottles exploded on Thursday morning shortly after 9am. This caused a short but spectacular fire.

A university employee told AFP he heard a loud explosion followed by two minor detonations. Recordings made by witnesses and published on social networks show spectacular explosions, followed by a fire and a large cloud of black smoke.

It is said that the accident occurred in the Mendel building, which houses a chemical and biochemical laboratory. According to the university, three people were slightly injured. Firefighters reported that 800 people had to be evacuated.

Three gas bottles had been stored on the roof of the building by the construction company Eiffage, which had carried out waterproofing work there. What has caused their explosion is not clear at the moment. Firefighters have confirmed that, although the fire is extinguished, the building is still under surveillance.
