“With a heavy heart,” Regina’s YMCA closes 2 of 3 locations: CEO

Two YMCA locations in Regina will close in the coming days, the local branch announced the press release on Monday evening.

The YMCA on Victoria Avenue East, near Gardiner Park, will close on Friday, while the headquarters on 13th Avenue will close on Monday, November 23.

“It is with a heavy heart that we share this news,” said Steve Compton, CEO of Regina’s YMCA, in the statement.

For several years, the local YMCA has faced more expensive construction and capital costs, as well as lower revenue in the health and fitness space, Compton said. Local Y was facing financial woes dating back to mid-2019 and was considering closing a location at the time.

But the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the situation, making it more expensive to provide services within public health guidelines. Since March, when the pandemic finally hit Saskatchewan, the total number of subscribers has dropped to 53% as people have directly unsubscribed from COVID-19, Compton said.

“We remain proud of our association and everyone who has been involved in its 130+ year history and look forward to continuing our work in providing important programming to Regina and Moose Jaw,” he said in the release, noting that programming would include child care, youth leadership programs and pre and after school centers.

Staff and volunteers from the two YMCA locations were informed today of the arrests, the statement said, adding that the organization will do what it can to help them and YMCA members during this time.

The YMCA headquarters on Rochdale Boulevard, northwest of Regina, will remain open.

CBC News contacted Compton but did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
