Wear the Ford Mustang Shooting Brake

Has Ford pushed the boundaries too far with the Mustang Mach-E? This rendering got us thinking …

Not long ago, few people could have imagined that Ford would take the famous pony badge and moniker from the Ford Mustang sports car and apply it to an SUV, bringing us the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E.

And, let’s face it, many are still questioning the wisdom of the move.

Something arguably more palatable, certainly less controversial, but still beyond bounds, might be the model you see here: the Ford Mustang Shooting Brake.

These are unofficial images, of course, and the Blue Oval bean counters would definitely make any such proposition kybosh given that SUVs are much hotter properties.

But this body style – the work of The Sketch Monkey – really resonates with us, and we think many Aussies will find it just as compelling as the Ford Mustang SUV they expected to head down once right-hand drive production has Start.

The artist showed off his rendering skills in a video uploaded to YouTube, where he started with a Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 and ended with what a Mustang Shooting Brake might actually look like if it came out of the Dearborn design center.

There are many noteworthy power sources, including the newly revealed Ford Mustang Mach-E GT Performance’s 358 kW / 860 Nm battery electric powertrain.

The Australian developed 522 kW / 827 Nm 5.0-liter V8 supercharged petrol engine and other parts of the Ford Mustang R-Spec would also be perfect.

Or a Ford Mustang Mach-1 Shooting Brake, anyone?

We’ve seen more cool Mustang renders lately, including a four-door sedan harking back to the days of the vanished but never forgotten Ford Falcon.

Yet it appears that Ford’s focus remains fixed on the Mustang as an SUV – Mach-E, that is – with electricity.

Despite initial reservations about placing a Mustang badge on an SUV, Ron Heiser, the engineer in charge of the Mach-E, was one of many to agree the EV was worthy.

“It will be a scream,” Heiser told carsales at the 2019 Los Angeles Auto Show.

Ford President Bill Ford said: “We are bringing performance and environmental friendliness to a vehicle in a way we have never been able to do before.”

What do you think? SB (Shooting Brake) or SUV? Or LMTHA? (Leave Mustang The Hell Alone)
