The outbreak in the Revera Mount Royal long-term care home confirmed the majority of cases in staff and residents of the facilities, with 105. Of these, 10 residents died, 83 recovered and 12 remained infected.
Agecare Skypointe has also seen many cases in staff and residents with six deaths among residents, 51 recoveries and seven active cases. The Spruce Lodge outbreak resulted in two deaths of residents, 27 healings and two active cases.
Extendicare currently has active outbreaks in two of its facilities – the Hillcrest and Cedars Villa care centers – which have resulted in the deaths of four residents. Both centers had no active cases as of Thursday.
As cases of spread in the community increase, so does the opportunity for the virus to enter long-term care settings.
“The threat this pandemic poses to residents remains very real and the increased incidence of the spread in the community is a matter of deep concern. It is vital to be vigilant in following public health guidelines so as not to put our most vulnerable at risk, ”a spokesperson for Extendicare said in a statement.
Although this second wave of infections is higher than the first in the spring, care centers are better prepared to fight an epidemic.
Extendicare has temporarily stopped social visits again and is actively screening all staff for symptoms, including temperature checks, at the start of shifts.
“Our hearts are with our community during this extremely difficult time,” Extendicare said.
