It is known that COVID-19 can also be obtained by touching contaminated surfaces. The risk is minimal, but real, because the new coronavirus can survive on any surface for hours to days. And on surfaces like smartphone glass, it can last nearly a month. The simplest way to mitigate this risk is to wash your hands frequently throughout the day and use a hand sanitizer whenever soap and water are unavailable.

Corning, a manufacturer of durable glass for phones, has come up with its own invention that can kill 99.9% of bacteria and viruses, including SARS-CoV-2, in less than two hours. The basis of the method called Corning Guardiant is the addition of a copper additive to the glass-ceramic technology, which means that this surface will actively destroy pathogens.

According to research from the company, Corning Guardiant can kill pathogens within two hours, including a new coronavirus, Staphylococcus aureus and murine norovirus, which belongs to the class of viruses that are most difficult to destroy with disinfectants. The coating worked in both wet and dry test conditions.

It is unclear when Corning Guardiant will be available and in what technology products it could be used. The company is applying for registration with the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Until EPA approval, the new liner will be available under the Copper Armor name, the company said.
