USRA appoints Lisa Gaddis as director of the Lunar and Planetary Institute

The Universities Space Research Association (USRA) today announced the appointment of Dr. Lisa Gaddis as Director, Lunar and Planetary Institute, starting November 9, 2020.
Since 1969, USRA has managed the Lunar and Planetary Institute, a leading research organization serving NASA and the planetary scientific community and conducting planetary scientific research through a core of scientists, visiting researchers and postdoctoral fellows.
As director of the Lunar and Planetary Institute (LPI), Dr. Gaddis will provide scientific leadership and management of LPI’s research and operations and will maintain and grow it as a primary research center in support of NASA’s strategic goals in the planetary science and solar system exploration.

Prior to her appointment to the USRA, Dr. Gaddis was at the US Geological Survey (USGS) Astrogeology Science Center in Flagstaff, Arizona, where she has worked since 1990 as a scientist, administrator and supervisor. He brings extensive scientific expertise to LPI, encompassing geology and geophysics, remote sensing, planetary science, space mission planning and operations, cartography and data storage. His research interests include analyzing the composition, physical properties and geological history of planetary surfaces in our Solar System, using remote sensing data at a variety of wavelengths. He has served as Principal Investigator (PI) on more than 35 NASA projects, including IP of the NASA Planetary Data Cartography and Imaging Sciences Node from 2004 to 2020. Lisa he was also Chief Scientist for the USGS Astrogeology Program, acting as PI of NASA Planetary Cartography Research Program 2003-2007 e manage a staff of 80 people and a budget of 8 million dollars. His NASA flight mission experience includes scientific and operational roles on Mars Exploration Rovers (MER) and a participating scientist on the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO).
A prolific author, she has published numerous articles in various scientific journals, several book chapters and has served on several committees and advisory groups for NASA on space science and national and international exploration plans. He is a member of the Geological Society of America and received the Interior Honor Award, Meritorious Service, from the US Department. He holds an AB from Vassar College, Sc.M. from Brown University and Ph.D. from the University of Hawaii.
