Blockchain courses are adopted by multiple institutions as a way to teach and equip the next generation of crypto-engineers to meet the ever-increasing demand for technology and its applications. Now, the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) is preparing to offer its first blockchain engineering course, thanks to a considerable donation from MouseBelt Blockchain Accelerator.
UCLA will offer an accredited Blockchain course
The university, which previously held blockchain and cryptocurrency seminars through the Anderson School of Management, announced that it will perform a complete technical blockchain programming course from January 2019.
The course will be offered as a 4-credit special topics course, which would be an elective higher division requirement that is open to both electrical and IT engineering and IT students. It will cover topics such as an overview of blockchain concepts, Ethereum, decentralized apps (dApps), cryptographic tokens, smart contracts, hash functions and more.
The class will be led by Professor John D. Villasenor, professor of engineering, electrical and electronic engineering, as well as public policy. He will be assisted by Jason Huan and Andrew Battat, who have conducted various blockchain workshops via Blockchain at UCLA, a student organization. MouseBelt Blockchain Accelerator is known for making investments in blockchain-based projects and startups, providing them with access to engineers and crypto developers to work on their projects, as well as dedicated support staff, marketing staff and business management personnel to ensure safety cases of use.
The company also stated that it is planning to add more schools to the university program in 2019 and that moves towards international expansion are already under way.
Patrick McLain, MouseBelt's Chief Operations Officer, told CCN via email:
"While the market is scary right now, we believe the future is bright. There is no better way to invest in the future than investing in youth. For us, this is just the beginning of building the bright future through our university program ".
The seats fill quickly
The course is accredited through UCLA and requires some background in programming from some other basic level classes. According to a MouseBelt representative who spoke with CCN, the slots for the course have already been filled, even though the registration was only open for a few days.
UCLA is joining a long list of universities to offer courses related to complete blockchains. At the beginning of last month, the University of Tokyo also announced that it would offer a DLT course at its graduate engineering department. The course, which was dubbed the Blockchain Innovation Donation Course, was launched on November 1stand the program should run until October 2021. The course was made possible through donations totaling around $ 800,000 from organizations such as the Ethereum Foundation and the banking giant Sumimoto Mitsui.
