Altcoins Ethereum Nowa (ETN) and Ethereum Classic Vision (ETCV) take over the private keys of users seeking to redeem their supposedly forked coins. The suspected scam was described in a report sent to Cointelegraph by the Watch Wallet development team on January 11th.
The official website of the Ethereum Nowa project – which does not contain a white paper – describes the process in which users should commit to obtaining the ETN. According to the website, the user must first send ETH to an address, then export the private key and redeem the cryptocurrency using the dedicated online tool.
A user of the Ethereum Etherscan explorer block commented on the above address, stating that the address is engaged in a "scam" [hard] fork / airdrop "after warning" Do not send anything here. "The tool to claim coins seems to be a clone of the well-known online portfolio Ethereum (ETH) MyEtherWallet (MEW), with the original logo, the website title and page in a different domain.
The main difference compared to the original MEW interface is that all the options that allow the user to choose how to access the wallet are disabled, apart from the one that allows the user to paste his private key. In addition, some browsers mark the tool as a "misleading site".
The Watch Wallet team wrote that, by analyzing the code, they discovered that the private key is not only processed by the tool, but also sent to a remote server. According to the Watch report, Ethereum Nowa "is a way for thieves to get your private information and get access to your wallet".
The hard fork of Ethereum Classic Vision, according to the project white paper, is happening today (11 January) at 20:00 GMT. The website contains links to a downloadable Windows and Linux portfolio along with a web tool. Next to the "Request fork" button, the website states:
"Regardless of the authorized portfolio you use to keep your ETH, your free ETCV will initially be sent to the official Ethereum Classic Vision portfolio while we are currently negotiating with a number of popular portfolios, at the time of the fork we will not be able to send ETCV to those wallets due to some differences in the algorithms used. "
The Watch Wallet team noted that while this project seemed more robust than ETN, after a more in-depth examination, it was found that the ETCV team had appropriated the private keys of the users:
"The code analysis performed by our team has shown that the piece of code supplied actually sends the data of your private key to the Ethereum Classic Vision servers, disguising it as an API token".
As Cointelegraph recently reported, a Maltese actor and two guests of a local television program have informed the police after a false news has indicated that they are involved in a Bitcoin investment scheme called Bitcoin Revolution.
Moreover, the same day, the news broke that the Twitter account of a Belgian non-profit association was obviously hacked into a fake US Crypto Exchange affiliate account.
