On Wednesday morning, a number of TransLink’s online services failed as the company investigated what it called “suspicious network activity” affecting its IT systems.

While officials didn’t call it a hack, a source told Global News that the entire database was hacked Monday night.

In a statement, the public transport agency said it was “working to restore full functionality of the system as soon as possible”.

“All transit services continue to operate smoothly and without any impact,” TransLink said. “No transit security system is affected.”

TransLink has shut down a number of online services as a precaution.

Customers could not use credit or debit cards at Compass Card vending machines or touch them at tariff gates.

They could still use cash at the ticket machines and the staff were on hand to help.

TransLink also warned that the stored value may take longer than usual to load onto a compass.

The trip planning tool has also been disabled.

Sources inside TransLink told Global News that phones don’t work, the radio system on buses has been inactive for more than 24 hours, drivers can’t access an online employee portal, and some activities are done manually.

TransLink said it was limited in the information it could share, “as this is an active investigation involving law enforcement.”

Vancouver Metro Transit Police said they were working with local and national cybercrime experts on the file.
