With Toronto and the Peel region set to become the first areas to enter the “ lockdown ” level of the province’s COVID-19 response framework starting at 00:01 on Monday for at least the next 28 days, here’s a look what it means for residents in those areas.
WHAT IS OPEN
- Schools, kindergartens, pharmacies, doctors and dental offices will remain open during closure
- Essential services such as supermarkets, grocery stores, convenience stores, hardware stores, discount stores and department store type retailers, LCBO and beer stores and security stores will also be open. There will be a 50% capacity limit for in-person purchases, which means there may be trainings to enter these places.
- Veterinary services will remain open
- The sale of motor vehicles is allowed only by appointment
- Garden centers and nurseries are open by appointment only unless pickup or delivery outside the curb is not available to the public
- Open-air markets are permitted with current public health measures
CLOSED WITHOUT EXCEPTIONS
- Hairdressers and barbers
- Nail salons
- Tattoo parlors
- Casinos, bingo halls and gaming establishments
- Amusement parks
- Strip clubs, beach clubs and sex clubs
- Museums, galleries, science centers, zoos and aquariums
CLOSED BUT WITH EXEMPTIONS
No indoor public events or social gatherings of any kind are permitted except with members of the same family. Outdoor meetings, where physical distance can be maintained, are limited to 10 people
Funerals, weddings, religious services
There is a limit of 10 people both indoors and outdoors, as long as physical distance can be maintained. The Catholic Archdiocese of Toronto says it will suspend public masses for the duration of the blockade, however, the churches will remain open to private prayer.
Restaurants, bars, food / beverage establishments
Indoor and outdoor service is prohibited, but establishments may offer takeaway, car transportation, and / or delivery that includes the sale of alcohol.
Retail malls
- Roadside collection or delivery only for non-essential activities; no purchases in person
- Essential businesses located within shopping centers can be opened with capacity limits of 50%
- The food outlets are open only for take away service
- Two meters of physical distance must be maintained while standing in line
Sports and recreational facilities, gyms, fitness centers
- All gyms are closed
- All internal structures such as fields, swimming pools and slopes are closed
- Indoor and individual team sports, including training, are prohibited. There are exemptions for high performance and pro league teams / athletes
- Community centers and multipurpose facilities can be open for things like childcare services
- Outdoor sports, classes and services are limited to 10 people
Spaces for meetings and events
These spaces are closed with exemptions for judicial and government services, while mental health and addiction assistance services are limited to 10 people.
Cinema / cinema
Only drive-in theaters / cinemas are allowed.
Cannabis
Cannabis dispensaries can only offer curbside pickup. No in-person purchases.
Driving instruction
In-person education is not allowed; virtual instruction is allowed.
Horse race
No competitions are allowed, only training sessions.
Housekeeping, maids, babysitting services, babysitting, maintenance services
All of these are permitted with public health measures.
Hotel, motel
Hotels and motels may remain open, but the pools, fitness centers, and meeting rooms are all closed
Libraries
- Roadside deliveries and collections permitted
- It can be open for permitted services such as daycare
- No lessons are allowed
Night clubs
Nightclubs can only stay open if they offer take-out, car transport or food / drink delivery.
