A wave of COVID-19 prompted the province to increase restrictions in the city and surrounding areas.

THUNDER BAY – The province has confirmed that Thunder Bay will move to the Orange-Restrict level, with a growing number of COVID-19 cases in the district.

The new restrictions will take effect Monday at 12:01 am

“Over the past seven days we have seen trends in key public health indicators continue to go in the wrong direction in these three regions,” Health Minister Christine Elliott said in a statement released Friday by the province.

“By taking proactive action and moving these regions to a higher level in the picture, we are helping them reduce transmission in the community and avoid wider closures. The health and well-being of Ontarians remains our top priority.”

The move to Orange will impact many businesses, especially restaurants, which will need to screen more and have shorter opening hours. The window for alcohol sales will also be reduced.

It also restricts visitors to long-term care homes across the region, not just those facing an epidemic. Only essential visitors are allowed, up to one caregiver per resident.

Thunder Bay is one of two boroughs moving to Orange from Yellow, while Middlesex-London is the other health unit. The district moved to the yellow zone on November 23rd.

Kenora moved into yellow last Friday.

Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit is turning from green to yellow.

There are currently 112 active COVID-19 cases in the Thunder Bay District Health Unit catchment area.
