A camera aboard a research vessel captured the moment when a meteor broke in the sky above the Tasmanian coast.

The live streaming camera aboard Australia’s CSIRO research vessel filmed the meteor at around 9.20pm on November 18th. The research vessel called “Investigator” is currently mapping the ocean floor 100km south of Tasmania, near Huon Marine Park.

The crew aboard the ship witnessed a bright flash that descended from space before it vanished.

Travel manager John Hooper said in a statement that capturing the moment was just “a stroke of luck”.

“What we saw when examining the live stream footage stunned us, the size and brightness of the meteor was incredible,” he added.

RV Investigator is part of the Marine National Facility, a dedicated marine research capability funded by the Australian government and owned and operated by CSIRO.
