The U.S. Department of Justice is discussing a deal with Huawei’s chief of finance Meng Wanzhou that would allow it to return to China from Canada in exchange for admitting wrongdoing, a person familiar with the matter said. .
Meng’s attorneys spoke with Justice Department officials in recent weeks about the possibility of reaching a “deferred power of attorney agreement,” the source said, confirming an earlier report from the Wall Street Journal.
Under that deal, Meng would be required to admit some of the charges against her, but prosecutors would potentially agree to postpone and later drop the charges if she cooperated.
Meng, 48, was arrested in December 2018 on a mandate from the United States. She is accused of bank fraud for allegedly misleading HSBC Holdings Plc on Huawei Technologies Co Ltd’s business dealings in Iran, causing the bank to violate US sanctions.
Department of Justice spokesman Marc Raimondi declined to comment. Huawei did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for comment.
